Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly does a postpartum doula do? A postpartum doula supports the whole family during the “fourth trimester”: the 12 weeks after baby arrives. During a visit I'll check in on everyone, assess what your family needs most that day, and get to work. That might mean caring for the baby while you sleep, making a meal, tidying the kitchen, doing laundry, offering guidance on newborn care, caring for your pet (I am a veterinary technician by trade) or simply being a listening ear.

Do you follow any particular philosophy or approach to newborn care? My approach is to support your family’s individual preferences without judgment or agenda. I respect all safe choices around newborn feeding, sleep, and care. If you would like guidance, I’m happy to draw on my training and experience to offer education and suggestions.

When should I book you? The earlier the better! Many families book prenatally so support is arranged before baby arrives. This can help the early days feel more manageable and less overwhelming. That said, it's never too late! If you're already in the thick of the newborn days, reach out today. If I’m not available to help, I can refer you to someone who is.

What might being overwhelmed look like or feel like for a parent? Caring for a newborn is difficult no matter your age, experience, or family situation. But have you been able to come up for air? Are you struggling on a daily basis to meet your own basic needs? Has the flurry of well-meaning visitors gotten to be too much? Are you shocked by the difference between what you imagined having a newborn would be like and the reality?

If any of this sounds familiar, that's what I'm here for. Reach out, you don't have to figure it out alone.

How is a postpartum doula different from a baby nurse? A baby nurse focuses primarily on the baby. A postpartum doula focuses on the whole family: baby, mom, and partner. I'm here to support everyone's wellbeing, not just the newborn.

Do you work with all kinds of families? Absolutely. Morning Light Postpartum welcomes families of all shapes and sizes.

Do you offer overnight support? Overnight visits are not available at this time.

How do packages work? Packages are available in 20, 40 and 60 hour blocks at $45/hour. Hours are strongly encouraged to be used within 12 weeks postpartum, that is the true fourth trimester and when you'll need support most. Unused hours do not roll over or carry a refund, and scheduling beyond 12 weeks is subject to availability.

Is a postpartum doula covered by health insurance? Can I pay for it with an FSA or HSA account? Coverage for postpartum doula services varies by insurance plan and is not typically included as a standard benefit. Some families may qualify for partial reimbursement depending on their policy.

Some employers also offer postpartum doula support through family-forming or wellness benefits (often via platforms like Carrot, Maven, or Cleo) or as a fertility/family-building stipend. Coverage varies widely by employer, so check your benefits or ask HR for details.

FSA and HSA eligibility also depends on your specific plan and whether postpartum doula care is considered a qualified expense.

Feel free to reach out if you’d like guidance on what to ask your provider.

What areas do you serve? Morning Light Postpartum serves families in South Jersey and the Philadelphia area.

Are you certified and insured? Yes. Michelle is a DONA International certified postpartum doula and carries professional liability insurance through CM&F Group.

What are Community Care spots and how do I ask about it? A limited number of community care spots are available for families who need support regardless of financial circumstance. Just get in touch and we'll have an honest conversation about it.
